ACLU and Communism

This is a great post about who started the ACLU. The title is linked to the blog I borrowed this information from (with permission). Some of it is here......more will be in the first comment.

Roger Baldwin, the first director of the ACLU, was a communist. He explains in his book, Liberty Under the Soviets, “I joined. I don’t regret being a part of the Communist tactic, which increased the effectiveness of a good cause. I knew what I was doing. I was not an innocent liberal. I wanted what the Communists wanted…”
William Z. Foster, then National Chairman of the Communist Party USA and an ACLU co-founder, is famous for this 1932 quote: “The establishment of an American Soviet government will involve the confiscation of large landed estates in town and country, and also, the whole body to forests, mineral deposits, lakes, rivers and so on.” He was the author of "Toward Soviet America".

Another co-founder was Harold J. Laski, renowned English socialist and political scientist. Among his writings is the Communist Manifesto of Marx and Engels: with the original text and prefaces.

Rev. Harry Ward, the “Red Dean” of the Union Theological Seminary in New York City was Chairman of the ACLU in 1920. In 1908, he was the founder of the oldest, officially-cited Communist-front group in America, the Methodist Federation for Social Action. A year later, he played a part in organizing the Federal Council of Churches, forerunner of the present day, National Council of Churches.

A. J. Muste held a degree from Union Theological Seminary. When war broke out in Europe, he became a pacifist, inspired by the Christian mysticism of the Quakers, and started working with the fledging American Civil Liberties Union in Boston. In 1929 Muste helped form the Conference for Progressive Labor Action (CPLA), seeking to reform the AF of L from within. When the Depression broke like a storm over America, the CPLA became openly revolutionary and was instrumental in forming the American Workers Party in 1933–a “democratically organized revolutionary party” in which A.J. played the leading role.

Scott Nearing, whose left-wing politics first drove him into, and then forced him to leave, the Socialist and Communist parties, was an early ACLU leader. He ran for Congress on the Socialist Party ticket in 1918 against incumbent Fiorello LaGuardia. He was soundly defeated because of his anti-capitalist, pro-socialist, anti-war positions.

Eugene V. Debs, who founded the Socialist Party of America, was a five time Socialist Candidate for the presidency. Debs, the only candidate to run for U.S. President from prison, was an ACLU activist.

John Dewey, radical philosopher and early ACLU activist was interested mainly in education. He asserted that “democracy has always been allied with humanism, with faith in the potentials of human nature” and that “democracy means the belief that humanistic culture should prevail.”

Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, another early ACLU leader, was born into an active socialist family. Her father was an organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), and she joined that organization at age 16. Flynn joined the Communist Party in 1936, and she was active in the CP for the rest of her life. She went to the USSR in 1964 to represent the CPUSA at an International Party Congress. She became ill, died in the Soviet Union, and was honored with a state funeral in Red Square.

Louis F. Batons was another prominent leader of the Communist Party and an ACLU activist.

Jane Addams, another ACLU co-founder, was a pacifist and an advocate of internationalism. She participated in the International Congress of Women at the Hague in 1915 and maintained her pacifist stance after the United States entered the war in 1917, working through the Women’s Peace Party, which became the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom in 1919. She was the WILPF’s first president.

Norman Thomas was a leading American socialist, pacifist, and six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party. He was a co-founder of the ACLU, and became a socialist while attending Union Theological Seminary.

Hey, may I suggest you get Holoscan for your comments. I've seen it a lot on blogger I think it's a better system than the one blogger has.

Anywho. I just wanted to say thanks, but aren't you interested in putting in a 'call to action'?? I mean don't we really need to get the ACLU off the government payroll? I certainly do. I think it's a travesty of judgement to allow them to do what they're doing, paid for by our tax dollars.

No thanks Cao, I do not like Haloscan. I would love to stop the ACLU from using public monbey, but for now I will have to be happy with educating any who stop by this blog. I have no aversion to writing my congressmen either. Any other suggestions?

I have posted about this, as you know RN, and consider the ACLU to be a treasonous bunch of legal thugs. On a related note, the day the story broke about San Francisco wanting to outlaw guns within city limits I called the ACLU and left a message. I had to leave a message, they apparently won't talk to common white guys. We are the ones they hate. Anyway, I left a message with their legal dept. asking them to go to 'frisco and defend my second amendment right to carry a gun there.

I didn't really expect a call from them. And so far they haven;t disappointed me.

The ACLU called me back today.....hehehe.

The ACLU would be the first in line to defend your civil rights, whether it's the right to bear arms, or anything else. You might not appreciate them, but you should be damn glad they exist to fight for your rights.

SheaNC, I don't see the ACLU supporting a whole lot in second amendment rights or freedom of religion (especially not in public). What I do see are a whole lot of restrictions on free speech and freedom of religion in public places. The ACLUs attack on the Boy Scouts is unforgiveable, unpardonable, and plain uncalled for especially with their simultaneous defense of NAMBLA. A decade ago I gave money to the ACLU, and now never again. The ACLU has a great deal of work to do to get any respect back from the public.

Actually SheaNC, I will be the first to stand up for my rights. The ACLU can disband as far as I care. They started from communists and they are leading us down that road too, subtly, one issue at a time.

At 8:59 PM, Blogger Kender said... soon as i have a few moments I am stopping back in at your blog to set you straight old man. I don't consider it polite to spank someone on the somebodies elses' comments section, especially someone I consider a friend, and a wise one at that. But for now a preview.

The ACLU has NEVER, NOT ONE TIME, defended our Second Amendment rights, and have only defended the first amendment when it is someone speaking out AGAINST Christianity. Speak out against the muslims however and the ACLU will crawl inside of ya' with a floodlight and a score of the most rabid leftists lawyers known to man.

Keep a light burning over at Constantly Amazed, because you are going to be even more amazed in the coming days.

And SeaNC? God Bless you brother.

Kender, it is not worth going to liberal sites to argue with them. Thanks though.

As I posted in the comment section of Abortion vs fetus murder the ALCU sided with a prolife movement as it pertained to freedom of speech. Not a second amendment issue - but still a religious oriented group.

Capitalism and Communism both suffer from the same shortfall. People are currupt. It just manifests much more quickly in communism. Putting the common good good ahead of individuals seems only to be common sense. Idealy many less people suffer. But if you can't manage to separate the political philosophy from the cold war stigma, take comfort that in practice communism and capitalism both put the well being of the few in power far above the well being of those without it.

When you have a friend or relative with an organ cancer, remember that dumping profitable poisons into our food chain has been ignored by capitalists for years. And in in case you didn't know, let me spell out that cancer is not genetic and it doesn't just happen, it is caused by repeated exposure to nasty chemicals (e.g. a Denny's waitress spraying raid onto a cooking surface or Bubba dumping his used motor oil into a storm drain that feeds the irrigation system for your grocery store's tomato crop, or the conservatives in government telling the coal industry that the don't have to prevent mercury, sulpher, and dioxins from escaping into the atmosphere through their smoke stacks [Clear Skies Initiative]).

No organization but the ACLU exists for the sole purpose of protecting our right to publically bitch about what bothers us, be it extramarital "relations" or being a sucker for "durn good" intelligence.

At 8:45 AM, Blogger Richard Nixon said...

The fact remains that the ACLU started as a drive to increase the communist agenda in America, and they continue to push extreme agenda. At some point the views of the many should be put in front of the views of the few. The ACLU founder did say;
“The establishment of an American Soviet government will involve the confiscation of large landed estates in town and country, and also, the whole body to forests, mineral deposits, lakes, rivers and so on.” He was the author of "Toward Soviet America".
