New site to visit

Linked to the title is a new web site which is a daily must read for conservatives. It is called the "Wide Awakes", named after supporters of Abe Lincoln in 1860 who marched through the streets in torchlight parades and spread the word of Lincoln’s candidacy.

It has 23 or so revolving authors and will be a great source of knowledge for you, so stop on by and take a look.

The most appropriate historically-tinged name for many of the conservatives in the republican party today would be the "Dixiecrats"; i.e., those who left the Democratic party due to its support of civil rights, although I'm sure that many conservatives can claim to hold views that would fit well in the 19th Century.

Nice try Steve, but without republicans President Johnson would not have been able to pass the civil rights bill. In addition, it was a democrat that put the confederate flag in the South Carolina flag, and Senator Byrd of West Virginia was a member of the KKK, Al Gores father, a senator during this era voted against the civil rights bill.

RN,
Liberals tend to be stiflingly history-challenged. I'm not surprised that you received a comment like this.

How the Democratic party convinced so many black Americans that they are on their 'team' is stunning in its deception and scope. Thankfully, we are making inroads to the truth, as this election returns showed.

Hmm- many people do not know that most of the KKK members were DEMOCRATS. Just because today the south is associated with being RED, doesn't mean it was always that way! 40 years ago the region was BLUE.

Steve, what is it that you hate so much about the 19th century? Was it that nasty state's rights that allowed states to actually govern themselves without meddling from the federal government, perhaps?

Aaah! Like a true liberal Steve hides behind anonymity.

In the March 10 New Yorker, they quoted a Nazi in support of the idea that Americans are jingoistic imperialistic rednecks. Columbia U professor Simon Schama quoted the anti-American bile of Norwegian writer and renowned Nazi-sympathizer Knut Hamsun. This is the essence of liberal admiration for Europeans and their pompous cultural snobbery: For proof that Americans are jingoistic hicks, they quote a Nazi.

The most interesting thing about the leftists and the confederate flag is their comparison of that to nazi swastikas and helmets. Dean said "I think the Confederate flag is a racist symbol". They're not outraged about abortion, adultery, illigitimacy or the divorce rate, or even a president who's molesting an intern with a cigar and lying to federal investigators. Democrats stake out a clear moral position on the issue of slavery. Of course, when it mattered, they were on the wrong side of that one, too (Lincoln was a whig, and the whigs were what eventually became the Republican party).

Despite revisionist history, the pure-of-heart Yanks were not in a vicious war with horrible racist southerners. In Lincoln's second inaugural address, he said the Civil War was God's retribution to both the North and South for the institution of slavery. By allowing slavery to continue past God's appointed time, Lincoln said, all of us had sinned; God "gives to both North and South this terrible war as the woe due to those by whom the offense came."

What is known as the "Confederate Flag" is the Southern Cross, the battle flag of the Confederate troops that they carried onto the field. It was not the official flag of the Confederacy and never flew over any buildings. It was the flag, very simply, of the Confederate Army.

Robert E. Lee opposed slavery and freed his slaves. Lee fought on the Confederate side because Virginia was his home. He thought his beloved Virginia had the right to be wrong. Lee was a very honorable man-a gentleman, in fact, and a great general. His men followed him, many of them hungry and barefoot, because of his personal qualities and because they lived in the South--not because wanted slavery. Shelby Foote describes confused Union soldiers asking a captured Confederate, poor and shoeless, why he was fighting when he clearly didn't own any slaves. The soldier answered, "Because you're down here." A small number of blacks served in the Confederate army, for reasons other than their support of slavery. At an abstract level, of course, the war was about slavery, but that's not why the soldiers fought. They didn't own slaves--their honor was at stake. Winston Churchill called this "the last war fought between gentlemen."

I think it's terrible that the dems have trashed this incredible symbol like this.

And here's more...while I'm on the subject...(and there's so much more on this)

Many military bases here in the US are named after Confederate officers--Fort Bragg, Fort Benning, Fort Hood, Fort Polk, Fort Rucker. When was the last time you heard a boy in uniform being interviewed who didn't have a Southern accent? These are the guys who are in our military when the country isn't even at war. These are our career military--mostly Southerners-who are left with the job of drafting kids from civilian life and whipping them into shape when the country is at war or needs to rally in our defense. Southerners are our warriors. And they're incredibly honorable.

The Confederate Army was the greatest army the world had ever seen. It is outrageous for libs and race demagogues to try to turn the Confederate battle flag into a badge of shame in the process of spitting on our gallant warrior class.

This is related to the honor of the south in a way. RN, I know I am off subject but please bear with me a moment.

I remember reading somewhere, long ago, that the majority of Medal of Honor winners were from the South, and not only that, but were of "Celtic Blood", i.e. descended from those great tribes that once wandered, and conquered, Europe. The Scots, Irish, Welsh and many other regions in Europe can trace back to the Celts, (that's a hard "C", sounds like a "K" to all you boston b-ball fans), and even today, the honor and nobility of the Scots, Irish, et.al, is noted.
Just a thought.

Thanks for bearing with me RN, I know it should be in Rants and Raves, but couldn't help it.
